Adele: the reigning Queen of Pop
December 15, 2015
Adele has made a comeback. Adele first emerged in 2007 with a cracked but powerful voice that captivated the media. Her strong voice and heartfelt lyrics threatened tear ducts of women everywhere. She bounced back in 2011 with her Album 21, that featured worldwide hits such as “Rolling In The Deep” and “Set Fire To The Rain.”
Now four years later, Adele has returned with a bang. The simple conversational word “hello” has grown exponentially in popularity, and not for conversational purposes.
The record-breaking hit song has already broken sales records and YouTube records. Adele has also recently appeared on The Tonight Show and Saturday Night Live to debut.
her new song “Hello.” The song is far from your average breakup song. It features a sense of distance and sadness about the heart’s inability to heal despite any amount of time. Adele’s already iconic lyric, “to say I’m sorry for everything that I’ve done,” evokes heartbreak within the listener and releases vagueness in the song.
Adele does not bash or insult the man she’s talking about; she rather apologizes and tells a story about her past.
In only five minutes, Adele succeeds in all aspects of the word. If her goal was to disrupt stability from everyone’s life, a round of applause seems to be appropriate. Not only is the song a tearjerker to her audience, she too felt emotional during the recording process and says that she knows she’s written a special song when it makes her emotional.
Perhaps a unique feature of Adele is her ability to connect with her listeners and gift for writing such lyrics.
Name brand artists in the 21st century often lack originality, especially in their lyrics. It is a rare moment to find popular songs that have a variation of lyrics, rather than repeating the same phrase dozens of times.
Aside from the hit song “Hello,” “Sweetest Devotion” is climbing the charts, and provides an entirely different message. In this song, Adele sings about happiness and about achieving peace within her life. But really, what does Adele have to be upset about? She’s on top right now.
