Juniors go all-out for annual “promposals”

Special to the Sentinel

Junior Joe Besagno asks good friend, junior Amanda Sabir, to prom with One Tree Hill reference.

It’s prom and ball season. The junior prom took place March 25th on the Hornblower yacht, which sailed around the bay for the night. But before we can spend a night on the bay, we had to anchor down some dates. When most of us think of prom we think of the dresses, and the dancing, but one of the best parts of prom season is the promposals. People make posters, and plan the perfect asking for weeks, recruiting the help of their friends. This year, there were some pretty good promposals, but here are a few highlights.

Ian Villers and Gillian Maraccini

Villers’ created a huge purple themed scavenger hunt for his girlfriend Maraccini, with clues for each step. It started as soon as she woke and eventually led her to the northgate baseball field, where him and his baseball teamates waited with posters asking her to prom.

“It started as soon as I woke. There were a bunch of purple balloons in my room. And a purple envelope which said to get ready. My favorite part of it was the breakfast at his house, he even put purple flowers for me on the table.”

“It was hard to keep her from finding out because she’s so nosy, she wanted to know about it,” said Villers about keeping the promposal on the downlow. But he was successful, and she was very surprised and happy.

Kevin Clancy and Clare Giatzis

Clancy took a little bit of a risk while promposing to his girlfriend, senior Clare Giatzis. While he and his friends were brainstorming how to ask her, they decided to write out ‘Prom?’ in fire.

“He picked me up for dinner, and when we pulled into the parking lot, I saw “Prom?” written out in fire, and he had a sign that said “let’s have a lit time at,” said Giatzis. “The best part was that all of our friends were there, and he caught me completely off guard with such a romantic and considerate gesture.”

Clancy pulled off this risky promposal in only a day, keeping it a secret from Giatzis the whole time. “I was totally surprised!” Giatzis said, “I didn’t even know I could go to prom until 2 weeks before so the asking was definitely unexpected.”

Joe Besagno and Amanda Sabir

One of the most thoughtful promposals this year was done by Joe Besagno, for his good friend Amanda Sabir. He asked her using a reference to her favorite TV show, One Tree Hill.

“He had a sign that said ‘Don’t say I never asked you anything,’ he made a bracelet that said ‘Prom?’ and he put it in a box of cracker jacks.” Sabir loved it, and as many other One Tree Hill fans thought it was cute and creative.

Besagno got the idea from a friend of Sabir’s, she was completely surprised, and said she would be wearing the bracelet at prom.

Jordan Burkes and Lindsey Cannon

Burkes surprised Cannon after her last Musical America performance with a delicious promposal, and a great way to end her 2017 Musical America.

“He asked me with a poster that said ‘Are you in or out?’ and gave me a bag with my favorite food from in n out,” Cannon commented. “I had no idea he was going to ask me until one of my friends ran over, grabbed my arm and covered my eyes after the show. When that happened I kinda knew he was gonna ask me.”

Cannon and Burkes both love In-n-Out, and often go there when they’re craving a burger and fries. The idea was super creative, and I’m sure Cannon appreciated the food after a long night of singing.

Cole Welsh and Katelyn Wetzell

Welsh used everyone’s favorite social media platform for his promposal to Wetzell, a senior this year. Welsh was doing a 100-day hat flip challenge on his snapchat story, with a hat flip every day, and used day 60 to ask Wetzell to prom.

“I didn’t know what to do for day 60, but I knew I wanted to ask Wetzell to prom soon, so I used the hat flip to do that,” commented Welsh.

Welsh wrote Wetzell’s instagram name on one hat, and ‘Prom?’ on the other, flipping them one after another in a video he then posted on his snap story.

Alas, Prom is over, but that doesn’t mean creative promposals are over. With Ball coming up for the Northgate seniors on May 27 at the Bently Reserve in San Francisco, everyone is very excited to see the ‘ballposals’ they come up with this year.
