Northgate’s four volleyball teams are halfway through the season with the varsity team establishing a 10-5 overall record, including an Aug 31 3-0 sweep of Clayton Valley Charter High School, an exciting 3-2 win over College Park High School Sept. 7, and a close 2-3 loss to Acalanes High School Sept. 12.
The varsity team’s most recent match Sept. 21 resulted in a 3-1 win over Benicia, bringing the team to 2-3 in league play and 10-5 overall.
Northgate’s volleyball depth is apparent in that for the second year, the school has four teams: varsity, junior varsity, freshman, and soph-frosh.
Coached by Grace Lau, the varsity team includes senior co-captains Siera Pence and Jackie Lee, and returning seniors Maya Collins and Tarin Camp.
Lee said she is looking forward to the rest of the season. “Many changes have been made to our program. Building our team this year has been challenging yet exciting as most of us have never played together before,” Lee said. “It is fun to be able to bond with players of all grades and see where our team goes.”
The last week of September will be a busy week with varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams playing Tuesday Sept. 26 against Campolindo in Moraga with the freshman team starting at 4 p.m., and Thursday Sept. 28 against Las Lomas at Northgate, starting at 4 p.m. The team plays Acalanes in Lafayette Thursday Oct. 5.
Juniors on the team are Ava Collado, Mina Ismen, Briana Lucchese, Feao Saluni and Ashlyn Victa. Sophomore Evelyn Alexander and freshmen Keira Everist, Caprice Campanelli, Makenna Kissack and Trini Rinaudo round out the team.
“I’m looking forward to our team playing Las Lomas and Acalanes this season, as I think they are tough competition and entertaining games,” Lee said.
