Administrators cancel plans for swab drug-testing

Staff Report

Northgate will not be implementing a swab drug-testing procedure as reported in the December print edition of the Sentinel.

Administrators said at the start of the year, in visits to English classes of all students, that the school would purchase and use a swab test that would have tested selected students suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at a school or school events.

The Sentinel wishes to clarify and update the article, Drug-testing awaits suspected students under the influence,  which was reported in October but not printed until December. Northgate and Mt. Diablo Unified School District administrators decided in October not to go forward with purchasing or using a high-tech drug-testing device, Principal Michael McAlister said in December. The school did not purchase these devices.
